the sigma personality type, explained (what's under the meme)

We have 11 personality types on our test, and Sigma is one of the deepest. It is also the one people clock instantly, because "sigma" is a meme by now. So let's actually open it up. What is under the joke?

On your result card, Sigma is the friend whose shower thoughts need a podcast. That line is doing more work than it looks, and it is not random.

Here is the real thing beneath it. In the Big Five, the trait behind Sigma is Openness. You land on Sigma when Openness is what stands out most strongly on the positive side of your profile, more differentiated than anything else. Openness is basically how open you are to new experiences, new ideas, and new ways of seeing things.

Openness is not one single thing though. It splits into six facets: imagination, artistic interest, emotional depth, willingness to try new things, intellectual curiosity, and openness to unconventional ideas. A 10-question test only samples the surface of that. To place all six precisely you would need a lot more questions, and sharper ones. And it's still not psychological or medical advice.

In practice, high Openness tends to look like this. A real pull toward the artistic. A vivid imagination that runs on its own. Ideas showing up faster than you can use them, and a habit of connecting things other people keep in separate boxes. It is the kind of mind that wanders somewhere interesting the second it gets a gap.

The flip side is the part nobody memes about -> overthinking. The thoughts that make you interesting are the same ones looping at midnight. Openness hands you the range, and the noise comes attached to it.

That is Sigma. One meme on the surface, one real trait underneath. This is the first of the 11, and we will open up the rest gradually.
